Whispers of Motion
Whispers of Motion is inspired by 무속춤 (Musokchum), the traditional Korean shamanic dance rooted in ritual, healing, and communion with the unseen. Through this piece, we channel the enduring spirit of the Korean “comfort women”—survivors of wartime sexual violence—whose stories still cry out from the silence of history.
Drawn in expressive charcoal and fluid ink, a solitary female figure rises from darkness. Her gesture, influenced by the flowing, trance-like movements of Musokchum, becomes a ritual of remembrance—a spiritual offering to those whose voices were stolen. Her body, both grounded and in motion, becomes a vessel of mourning and resilience.
A faint rose hue emerges behind her—subtle but intentional. This delicate color suggests memory, femininity, and the hope that persists even in deep sorrow. It softens the black void around her, where silence once reigned, allowing a space for healing to take root.
Musokchum is a dance of transformation and invocation; through it, pain is expressed and spirits are acknowledged. In this work, we draw upon that tradition not to depict a literal ritual, but to embody its essence—turning dance into testimony, movement into memory.
Whispers of Motion is both an homage and an act of resistance: to remember, to honor, and to ensure that what was once hidden is now witnessed.
